The nursing immigration story -- covered by DOTmed News in our April 20th issue -- is in the headlines again. The U.S. nursing shortage hit the front page this week in the May 24th issue of The New York Times. The story focused on concerns over immigration of foreign nurses, and the problem the drain could have in the countries the nurse come from.

The proposed U.S. law would remove the cap on the number of nurses who can come to the U.S. The story also focused on a possible brain drain from the Philippines, India and Africa, which may lead to poorer health care provision in those regions. The U.S. pays so much more that some physicians from overseas are willing to work as nurses in the U.S., The Times reported.

DOTmed News' Mike Johns reported last month The U.S. To Recruit South Korean Nurses that as many as 10,000 nurses could be leaving South Korea to work in the U.S. over the next five years. (Mike covers the issue regularly in our Career Corner, including headlines from workpermit.com.) Back in March, DOTmed's Tyler Wenzel reported on the underlying problem of a shortage of nursing faculty in the US to train tomorrow's nurses.

The jury is still out on which (if any) version of the immigration bill will pass and whether the cap on nurses will be lifted. One thing's for sure: The US Department of Health and Human Services has predicted that in the year 2020, there will be a shortage of 800,000 nurses in the US.
