Initial Findings Presented at ISCT Show Impact of Advanced CT Dose Reduction Technology
TUSTIN, Calif. - Today's healthcare facilities seek to manage patient radiation dose while maintaining high image quality for accurate diagnoses. Dr. Jeff Dardinger from St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Edgewood, Ky., will discuss the initial findings of using Toshiba's AIDR 3D with the AquilionTM ONE CT system to lower dose while maintaining high image quality across multiple CT exams. The presentation, titled "The Impact of AIDR 3D in the Routine Clinical Setting: Lower Doses and Improved Image Quality," will take place on Monday, June 18, at noon PT, at the International Society of Computed Tomography's (ISCT) International Symposium on Multidetector Row CT in San Francisco, Calif., June 17 - 20, 2012.
For this study, St. Elizabeth monitored a group of patients who were imaged prior to AIDR 3D and required follow-up CTs after the installation of AIDR 3D. When comparing the exams, initial findings show AIDR 3D's ability to significantly reduce dose across multiple CT exam types, including chest, abdomen and pelvis, while still maintaining high-quality images for diagnoses.

"The ability to quickly upgrade our Aquilion ONE with AIDR 3D and see significant reductions in patient dose almost instantly is extremely important, especially to a high-volume community hospital like St. Elizabeth, where many patients receive follow-up exams," said Dr. Dardinger, St. Elizabeth Director of Advanced Imaging and Vice Chairman of Radiology.
Throughout the past month, St. Elizabeth Healthcare has imaged approximately 1,500 patients using the Aquilion ONE with AIDR 3D. AIDR 3D is Toshiba's third-generation iterative dose reconstruction software that incorporates significant system enhancements by reducing radiation dose compared with conventional scanning. It is a sophisticated algorithm designed to work in both the raw data and image data spaces, reducing noise while attempting to maintain image quality.
