Siemens fulfills boy's Xmas wish: an MRI scanner

by Loren Bonner, DOTmed News Online Editor | December 20, 2012

Fowler got hold of Craig Marshall, managing director of Siemens Magnet Technology in the UK. He informed her that they had a prototype of a MAGNETOM Aera 1.5T magnet model they would be happy to send her. "It was a no brainer for me," said Marshall. "I explained in the letter [to Fowler] that one of my cousins has an autistic son and he has a fascination with airplanes. But airplanes are an easy interest to satisfy. Body scanners are much more difficult."

Last week, Siemens sent a package containing the magnet and some of the latest educational brochures on MRI scanners to the Fowler's home in Arkansas. A note was also included from Marshall inviting Artie to a factory tour if the Fowler family ever made a trip to Europe.

According to Siemens, the package arrived safely from the UK factory, just in time for Christmas.

"You have no idea the happiness to unfold at our house on Christmas morning when he opens this," Fowler told Siemens.

A GE spokesperson told DOTmed News that earlier this week, GE sent a Christmas package to Artie that contains a plastic and wooden CT scanner model, coloring books and puzzles that help children cope with the CT scan experience, CT videos and CDs, a picture of Santa with the model CT, and a note from Santa to Artie.

Kudos to Siemens and Mr. Marshall for supporting this unique request and to Ms. Fowler for her obvious kind spirit and her love of Artie and for her efforts toward fulfilling Artie's special wish. Heart warming.

Great story! I love that both companies went out of their way to support a boy who is as passionate about scanners as they are. Bravo!
