AHRMM Wrap-up: DOTmed Spreads the Word About the Used Medical Equipment Market

DOTmed was among the exhibitors at AHRMM's conference held this week (August 13-16) in Orlando, Florida. The event is growing in popularity and no doubt surpassed last year's 2,200-attendee mark. The exhibit hall was packed with booths, according to Mitchell Aguirre, DOTmed's sales manager, who estimated 50 percent more exhibitors than last year.

Vendors and consultants all want to help facilities managers handle their challenging jobs. "A lot of the facilities people wear more than one hat now. In cost-cutting times fewer people are doing more jobs," Aguirre said of pressures faced by attendees at the conference. "What they're experiencing is an overload of information and duties and the show really gave them the opportunity to catch up and look for things they need.....That's what conventions are for."

The conference focused on the health care supply chain where DOTmed plays a vital role for the used medical equipment industry. "What we were speaking to them about is helping them get either more money for the equipment that they're selling now or help them move equipment that is either in inventory or storage or is going be replaced with new equipment," Aguirre said.

Once people learn about the used medical equipment market, they take notice. "They realized it's an issue they're battling with--to move inventory--so they were very interested," he said. Most facilities managers pursue one of three options for their equipment: Either sell it on their own, trade it in, or give it to charity. "A lot of hospitals take [the charity] option--they don't want to deal with it so they just give it away. But there's a whole host of hassles that accompany that."

Aguirre made sure attendees knew about another option: DOTmed's online marketplace for used medical equipment.

"It's a no-hassle way to go....One of the ways we've been successful in the past with hospitals is that we encourage them to give us just one piece of equipment to try and it. Once you get them, they're hooked," he said.
