Synaptive Medical Inc. announced on Monday the release of its second-generation robotic digital microscope.

The Modus V succeeds the company’s BrightMatter Drive, which was released in May 2016.

"Surgeons using our first generation system told us that it was effective at leveraging automation and tracked instrumentation to help keep their hands in the surgical field, leading to more efficient surgeries,” Cameron Piron, co-founder, president and chief strategy officer at Synaptive Medical, told HCB News. “They liked this hands-free functionality and the high depth-of-field optics, but wanted to use the system with a wider range of procedures.”

The new microscope’s robotic surgical arm is powered by Canadarm technology, which is used on the International Space Station. The arm is more flexible than the previous generation and can cover a larger area.

According to the company, the Modus V has the most powerful optics available on the market. This provides surgeons with a detailed view of the patient’s anatomy so they can provide less invasive procedures with more accuracy.

“It's both a high resolution microscopic visualization device, with resolution exceeding that of a top-tier microscope, and a high depth of field exoscopic device capable of working at a high standoff distance,” said Piron. “Surgeons can choose to use the system's optical power in the way that works best for their patient and the required procedure."

The Modus V also features advanced instrument tracking with auto-focus. That combined with the flexible robotic arm, enables hands-free control, better ergonomics and greater versatility during the procedures.

It was designed based on feedback from Synaptive Medical’s clinical partners and is the cornerstone of the company’s flagship BrightMatter platform.
