HCB News: You have been involved in several initiatives in your time at AHRA. Of all your accomplishments here, which by far are you most proud of?
EC: I would say two things stand out. First, was realizing the great potential of using AHRA to bring together our membership and the great companies in medical imaging. Through the generosity (both financial resources and the knowledge and expertise) of our vendor partners, we were able to develop and expand our educational programming. Our members became better managers and leaders and also better, educated customers. In my mind, a BIG win-win.

Closer to my heart though, was being able to recognize the incredible culture that exists among our members and formalizing that in our messaging and strategic direction. That has helped us grow our membership towards 6,000 while maintaining excellent member satisfaction. "We Are All In This Together" is a slogan but it really is the core of who we are.

HCB News: What lessons have you learned from your time as CEO at AHRA?
EC: Not so much a new lesson but complete confirmation of a leadership philosophy I try to maintain: Have integrity, work hard, be a team player, and Have Fun! As I have worked everyday with the very talented staff professionals on our team, with the Leadership and Board of Directors as they plan strategically to govern the association, working with our volunteers and just being with our members at local or national meetings has reinforced for me that this philosophy works!

HCB News: How has the industry changed in the last ten years and where do you perceive it heading?
EC: It certainly has gotten much more difficult and challenging for our members. Healthcare reform and its contradictory pressures: Increasing regulations and requirements and declining reimbursement have put much pressure on imaging management leaders. Facility and system consolidations have also changed the landscape of how patient care is delivered.

On a positive side, we believe AHRA members are better positioned for success through the knowledge and support they receive from their association.

HCB News: If you could give word of advice to your successor, what would it be?
EC: Not really my place to give advice. I am sure our board will select the right person with the right qualities to lead AHRA into the future. I would just congratulate that person on having one of the best professional opportunities to help great people do some great things!

HCB News: What plans do you have for yourself going forward in your retirement?
EC: My wife, Carolyn, and I have recently purchased a mountain home near Asheville, NC. I am looking forward to spending more time with the family, especially our eight wonderful grandchildren.
