New evidence points to vitamin D as an effective nutrient against cancer. Creighton University School of Medicine in Nebraska recently released some exciting news relating to research conducted there. Taking a daily dose of vitamin D and calcium can reduce the risk of cancer by 77 percent. The risk is reduced in breast cancer, colon cancer, skin cancer and many other forms of cancer. As a matter of fact, this research evidence points to the fact that vitamin D is the most effective medicine against cancer - actually leading the pack in the positive benefits of any other cancer drug available.
Included in the study were 1,179 rural Nebraska women - one group of women was given about 1500 mg of calcium daily and vitamin D (1100 IU daily). The other group was given a placebo. Over a four-year period, the women receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements displayed a 60 percent decrease in cancers.
On the heels of this study, Dr. Michael Holick of Boston University School of Medicine in a review published in the New England of Medicine, Dr. Holick also noted that about 1 billion people are estimated to be vitamin D deficient with European children and adults most at risk and because very few foods are fortified with vitamin D.

In older adults, vitamin D deficiency can increase the risk of developing osteopenia, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, fractures, common cancers, autoimmune diseases, infectious diseases and cardiovascular disease.
Researchers and experts from all over the world are calling for international agencies like the Food and Nutrition Board and Consumer Protection Directorate to reassess their dietary recommendations for vitamin D.
