For some time, radiologists have read research indicating that digital mammography provides a clinical advantage in screening for breast cancer in young women and those with dense breast tissue.
A new study in Annals of Internal Medicine reinforces only very targeted use of the high-tech screening approach from an economic standpoint.
The study finds that digital mammography doesn't justify its increased costs unless it is used sparingly. Compared to film mammography, digital is cost-effective only when age-targeted. "Density-targeted screening strategies are more costly and of uncertain value, particularly among women age 65 years or older," the researchers conclude.
