AAPM Issues CT Radiation Dose Management Report

by Joan Trombetti, Writer | February 25, 2008

Physicists in
Medicine (AAPM)
The American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) issued a CT radiation dose management report recently recommending standardized ways of reporting doses and educating users on the latest dose reduction technology.

The report is targeted at radiologists, medical physicists and other medical professionals and outlines the best ways to measure, manage and prescribe radiation doses as well as giving an overview of ways that doctors can optimize modern CT scanners to get the most "bang for the buck" reducing to a bare minimum the amount of radiation to which patients are exposed while still allowing them to benefit from the technique's life-saving ability to image inside the human body. For more information visit the Association's Web site at http://www.aapm.org.

The need to minimize patient radiation exposure during CT studies is a hot topic of late with several new scanner technologies from the large OEMs designed to maximize image clarity while limiting dose. In addition, an alliance of radiology professional associations is working toward limiting pediatric exposure in particular in a program called Image Gently, www.imagegently.org.
