Sutter Health is expanding its flagship hospital in Midtown Sacramento, constructing 42 new adult inpatient rooms at Sutter Medical Center. This $100 million project aims to accommodate the growing demand for healthcare services in the greater Sacramento region.

The expansion will transform 43,320 square feet of shell space on the fifth floor of Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center into a 12-bed intensive care unit and 30 medical-surgical rooms. The fourth floor of the center currently houses a 48-bed adult ICU.

“One of our health system’s main priorities is providing increased access for all patients throughout our Northern California footprint,” said Sutter Health CEO and president Warner Thomas. “Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento provides world-class, state-of-the-art care for both adults and children, and this expansion will allow more patients to access the best care available in California’s capital city.”

Construction is set to begin in April 2025, with the new rooms expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

Five of the eight floors at Anderson Lucchetti Women’s and Children’s Center are dedicated to pediatrics and maternity care, including a pediatric ICU, high-risk maternity unit, Northern California’s largest neonatal ICU, and 51 private rooms for mothers and newborns with views of downtown Sacramento and the foothills.

This project is part of a broader Sutter Health growth strategy in Northern California, which includes plans to open 24 new care centers. Serving nearly 3.5 million patients, Sutter Health has over 57,000 employees and clinicians, and more than 12,000 affiliated physicians, with a unified focus on expanding care to serve more patients.

Earlier this month, Sutter Health began a renovation at Sutter Roseville Medical Center to add 24 medical-surgical patient rooms and a 12-bed adult ICU. Last year, Sutter completed an expansion of Sutter Davis Hospital, which included five new general acute care beds and enhancements to the emergency and maternity departments.
