KARL STORZ launches Pathway.AI to improve operating room efficiency

Operating Room
KARL STORZ, a leader in surgical technology and OR integration, has announced the U.S. launch of Pathway.AI, an advanced tool designed to streamline operating room workflows.

Developed in partnership with Artisight and powered by its Smart Hospital Platform, Pathway.AI leverages machine learning and ambient sensors to enhance OR efficiency by automating tasks and providing real-time operational insights.

The technology can detect key status changes in the OR, such as when a patient exits, when cleaning begins and ends, and when the room is ready for the next procedure. These events trigger automated functions, such as notifying cleaning staff or recording timestamps in electronic medical records, tasks that traditionally rely on OR staff.

“Pathway.AI serves as an important step toward a comprehensive, enterprisewide smart automation solution through the combination of Artisight in patient rooms and clinics and KARL STORZ in the OR,” said Steve Martin, director of corporate operations, OR1 at KARL STORZ United States.

Artisight’s platform integrates sensors, microphones, and machine learning algorithms to capture and analyze workflow data. By reducing manual inputs, Pathway.AI aims to minimize delays, shorten turnover times, and improve resource allocation, potentially enabling hospitals to handle more surgeries with the same staff.

The system is highly customizable, adapting to the specific workflows of each OR while maintaining HIPAA compliance. Privacy safeguards and real-time filters ensure the protection of patient and clinician information.

Artisight CEO, Dr. Andrew Gostine, emphasized the broader implications of the collaboration, noting that combining Artisight’s AI-driven platform with KARL STORZ’s surgical expertise aims to transform OR operations and promote broader clinical adoption of AI technologies.
