B. Braun SE has acquired full ownership of True Digital Surgery (TDS), a Goleta, California-based developer of robotic-assisted 3D surgical microscopy systems.

The move consolidates B. Braun’s position in the digital microsurgery space and aims to accelerate the development of advanced surgical visualization tools within its Aesculap division.

Prior to the acquisition, B. Braun held a minority stake in TDS. By bringing the company fully under its umbrella, B. Braun will integrate TDS’s expertise into the development of the Aesculap AEOS® platform, which is used in neurosurgical, spinal, and ENT procedures.

“This strategic move enables us to integrate the cutting-edge technology and innovative capabilities of TDS,” said Dr. Jens von Lackum, executive board member at B. Braun responsible for the surgical division. “By combining the best of both worlds, we can continue to provide our customers with best-in-class systems in robotic assisted 3D microsurgery.”

The acquisition comes amid a broader shift in the microsurgery market, as hospitals increasingly adopt digital exoscopes over traditional analog microscopes. These systems offer enhanced visualization, ergonomic benefits, and 3D imaging, allowing surgeons to operate using monitors instead of optical eyepieces.

TDS, which will continue to operate as a technology hub in Goleta, is expected to focus on product innovation and integration following the acquisition.

“This merger with such a highly respected healthcare organization as B. Braun represents an exciting new milestone for True Digital Surgery,” said Aidan Foley, former TDS CEO and chairman of the board. “The combination of our groundbreaking technologies with B. Braun’s access to the global healthcare market represents an incomparable opportunity for both companies.”
