In an historic election by any measure, the United States chose Barack Obama as its president-elect (to take office in January 2009). DOTmed Online News is in a unique position to gather opinions from the health and medical industry worldwide about the significance and implications of the American election.
By U.S. standards the election was not close. Obama won 349 electoral votes to McCain's 162. (The U.S. Constitution apportions each state a number of votes according to their number of representatives in Congress. Note that some states are still not pledged as of this writing and technically the electoral college will choose Obama next month.)
Americans like to call our commander-in-chief the "leader of the free world" or simply POTUS--President of the United States.
