AMA Urges Stop to Industry Influence

The American Medical Association has issued a proposal that doctors all but sever their ties to industry. The proposal, "Professional Medical Associations and Their Relationships With Industry: A Proposal for Controlling Conflict of Interest" is published in this week's JAMA.

A distinguished group of clinical opinion leaders developed the manifesto, which acknowledges the valuable role of medical associations, backed by industry, such as in staging conferences. However, the authors analyzed the conflicts of interest and formulated strict guidelines "to prevent the appearance or reality of undue industry influence."

The result may be a restriction or curtailing of associational activities.
