Deerfield Imaging (“IMRIS”) announced today that Dr. Gregory Sorensen, former president and CEO of Siemens Healthcare North America, will join the company as executive chairman. Sorensen is a neuroradiologist who is well-known for his pioneering medical imaging research and clinical practice expertise.

"Technology has so much to offer the surgical patient," Sorensen told HCB News. "We intend to improve care by bringing enabling technology — like that which IMRIS is so well known for — to the surgeon in as efficient and effective a manner as possible."

Sorensen stepped down as president of Siemens Healthcare North America earlier this month after more than four years with the company. Before that, he spent almost 25 years as a neuroradiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH).

He was also professor of radiology and health sciences and technology at Harvard Medical School, a faculty member of the Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology, co-director of the A.A. Martinos Center for Biomedical Imaging at MGH and visiting professor of neuroradiology at Oxford University.

Sorensen is very passionate about improving patient care with scientific advances, and he believes that he will be able to do that with IMRIS. He thinks that IMRIS technology has "great untapped potential" and is confident that he can help them unlock that value for the benefit of all of their stakeholders.

IMRIS announced in June that it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and that it would be sold to an investor group in the following two months. In late August, Deerfield Imaging completed the acquisition of IMRIS.

IMRIS’ flagship product, the VISIUS Surgical Theatre enables ceiling-mounted MR and CT systems to facilitate intraoperative procedures. Deerfield Imaging stated that almost 20,000 patients have benefited from procedures in VISIUS Surgical Theatres.
