Vizient, Inc. announced yesterday that it has acquired MedAssets’ Spend and Clinical Resource Management (SCM) segment and its Sg2 solution. The combined company will represent some of the top hospitals and health systems in the U.S. including Western Connecticut Health Network, Arkansas Children’s Hospital and INTEGRIS Health.

"We firmly believe that under Vizient, the combined strengths of VHA, UHC, Novation, MedAssets SCM and Sg2 will eclipse the rest of the industry," Byron Jobe, president and chief administrative officer at Vizient, told HCB News. "From lowering costs to enhancing care delivery, Vizient will provide targeted solutions that improve member performance."

Earlier this year, the decision was made to combine VHA Inc., a national network of not-for-profit health care organizations, University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC), an alliance of the nation’s leading nonprofit academic medical centers, and Novation, a health care services company, to form Vizient. The company is planning on incorporating MedAssets’ SCM business into the Vizient brand by the end of this year.

MedAssets is a health care performance improvement company that helps hospitals and health systems enhance their financial and operational systems. On MedAssets’ website, it states that its “Clinical Resource Management Solutions provide proven, data-driven methodologies, technology and experienced experts to build consensus and achieve integration of clinical value with financial goals.”

MedAssets acquired Sg2, which was a leading provider of health care business intelligence, market analytics and clinical consulting services, in September 2014. Its experts and software analytics tools are used by over 1,400 hospitals, health systems, pharmaceutical companies and medical device companies.

The joint organization will provide increased scale in intelligence, data assets and purchasing to address supply, clinical and operational improvements, according to Vizient. Its diverse membership and customer base includes academic medical centers, pediatric facilities, community hospitals, integrated health delivery networks and non-acute health care providers, which represents a combined $100 billion in annual purchasing volume.

"Simply put, the combined products, services and expertise of Vizient will help members and customers significantly improve their financial, clinical and operational performance and achieve even greater value for their patients and communities," said Jobe.

Vizient’s headquarters are in Irving Texas, but also has locations in Chicago and other cities across the U.S. The company claims that it is now the largest member-owned health care company in the country.
