It's seven-out-of-seven for patient monitoring efforts by Philips Medical Systems when it comes to the U.S. Defense Department (DoD).

The DoD has OK'D — for the seventh time — a one-year option on a base contract with the firm, that is slated to run nine years, according to the agency. The value of the deal is a maximum of $77,172,660.

The contract covers various monitoring systems, subsystems, accessories, consumables, spare parts, repairs and training. Work will be done at the company's Andover, Mass., facilities, to be finished by the end of March, 2017. Services that will make use of these offerings include the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and federal civilian agencies.

"The contracting activity is the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support, Philadelphia," stated the DoD.

Philips Healthcare's work with the military has been in the news recently. Just last September the firm received $25 million for defibrillators in a deal with the Defense Logistics Agency, according to the Boston Business Journal.

And in early March the company made a major announcement: its digital pathology solutions met the stringent DoD certification requirements, under its DoD Information Assurance Certification and Accreditation Process (DIACAP).

To qualify, the company will apply the department's Risk Management Framework as well as industry best practices for security across all of its digital pathology solutions.

“Digitization will continue to revolutionize health care by securely providing caregivers with integrated clinical relevant data at the right time, regardless of their location," Russell Granzow, General Manager of Philips Digital Pathology Solutions said in a statement. “This latest certification allows DoD labs to leverage our platform to collaborate globally while securing the delivery of patient-related data.”

The new certification means that all DoD sites globally may now use the Philips IntelliSite pathology solution, including the Image Management System, Pathologist Suite and Ultra-Fast Scanner.

This "further underscores Philips’ commitment to ensuring DoD’s health care information is secure and safe by continuously updating its products security," stated the company.

Such cybersecurity measures are in the forefront of DoD IT concerns these days. In fact, it just released an amended version of its implementation plan entitled "DoD Cybersecurity Discipline" on March 30. The 27-page document's warnings and guidelines are relevant to health care systems as well as all DoD networks.
