Cleveland Clinic announced today that its first regional hospital built in Ohio, Avon Hospital, will start accepting patients on November 15. The health system is referring to it as its patient-friendly, "hospital of the future."

All of the clinicians are equipped with wireless devices that enable them to communicate with each other from anywhere in the hospital. Each patient room has an interactive television that allows the patient to access their EMR, watch educational medical care videos and control the room temperature.

Avon Hospital also offers its "eHospital," in which caregivers can monitor the most critically-ill ICU patients with a remote monitoring system. The physicians and nurses are able to respond to patient needs faster with this technology.

It cost over $161 million to build the five-story, 212,000 square-foot hospital onto the north side of the existing Richard E. Jacobs Health Center. It has 126 private hospital rooms, an ICU, new operating rooms, a cardiac cath lab, pharmacy and lab.

Over a dozen specialties are offered at the new hospital including cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, general surgery, orthopedics, pulmonology, urology, gynecology, hospital medicine, vascular medicine and vascular surgery.

The Richard E. Jacobs Health Center opened in December 2011 and has grown to become Cleveland Clinic's highest volume family health center. The health center has about 42,000 patient visits, and the 24-hour emergency department sees about 2,400 patients per month.

Cleveland Clinic has eight community hospitals and 16 family health centers in Northeast Ohio. Those include the Lorain Family Health and Surgery Center, Elyria Family Health and Surgery Center, Avon Lake Family Health Center, Avon Pointe Family Health Center, Amherst Family Health Center, Sheffield Family Health Center and North Ridgeville Medical Office Building.
