Mount Sinai Health System and CityMD have announced a partnership that will focus on urgent care services in New York. It will bring together Mount Sinai's network of providers and CityMD's expertise in urgent and clinical care management.

Many patients who are treated in an urgent care facility have chronic conditions and would benefit from a visit with primary care physicians and specialists. Through the partnership, Mount Sinai will provide that kind of follow-up care to CityMD patients.

Both parties will establish quality metrics for the shared provider network to ensure that patients have immediate access to specialty care when needed. They will also share EMRs so patient data can be accessed faster.

Mount Sinai has about 7,100 primary and specialty care physicians throughout New York City, Westchester, Long Island and Florida as well as 31 affiliated community health centers. The physicians are affiliated with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

CityMD was founded in 2010 and has grown to more than 50 practice locations in Manhattan, Long Island, Rockland/Westchester counties, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and New Jersey.

The partnership may point to an emerging trend in care delivery as health systems across the country are showing interest in the urgent care business. In January 2014, CareWell Urgent Care partnered with Lahey Health in Massachusetts.

“Many patients treated in the urgent care setting have chronic conditions that would benefit from prompt, efficient follow-up care by highly-trained primary care physicians and specialists," Dr. Kenneth L. Davis, president and CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System, said in a statement. "Mount Sinai’s vast primary and specialty care network combined with CityMD’s urgent care network will create more effective health care that meets the needs of New York’s diverse populations."
