Inspirata recently inked a deal with GE Healthcare to acquire its digital pathology venture — Omnyx.

“Omnyx is a high-performing digital pathology company with a global footprint that invested a lot of money over a 10-year period in its core technology.” Satish Sanan, CEO of Inspirata, told HCB News. “There are no other digital pathology companies that offer these advantages.”

Omnyx was a joint venture, between GE and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, that started in 2008. But the medical center backed out in December, 2016 mostly due to “regulatory uncertainty” and Omnyx folded into GE, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Inspirata is now the owner of Omnyx’s Dynamyx digital pathology software, which has a CE mark and Health Canada approval. The company plans to integrate Dynamyx into its Digital Pathology Cockpit to offer a comprehensive digital pathology workflow solution.

The Digital Pathology Cockpit is a multiscreen configuration with digital pathology software that provides pathologists with a single place to view and manipulate images, collaborate with colleagues and access decision support and reporting tools.

“The acquisition of Omnyx expands Inspirata’s geographic footprint and market presence with an in vitro diagnostic solution for primary diagnosis throughout Europe and in Canada,” said Sanan. “It also takes us the last mile to having a completely device- and application-agnostic platform that can integrate with customers’ existing hardware and health information systems.”

Inspirata plans to retain Omnyx’s employees and use its office in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and associated resources to create a center of excellence for ongoing digital pathology software development.
