Bartow Regional Medical Center in Florida has broken ground on a $110 million expansion project.

With the local population increasing by about 26% since the facility’s current site opened in 1999, the expansion seeks to boost the hospital’s capacity and capabilities. “This project is not just about managing capacity right now, but also making sure we’re able to grow in the future,” said Bartow Regional Medical Center president Karen Kerr.

The expansion will add 18 new beds to bring the hospital’s total to 90. In the first phase, set to last 16 to 18 months, the emergency department will gain 27 new exam areas. The hospital also plans to expand the ICU, sterile processing department, and operating room, along with improvements to the cardiac catheterization lab.

At a groundbreaking ceremony, local officials highlighted the hospital's impact on the community. Bartow Mayor Trish Pfeiffer said the expansion is about more than just capacity. “It’s about enhancing the quality of life for our residents,” she said, noting the hospital’s role in providing essential, high-quality care close to home.

Construction is expected to span several years.
