In Seoul, South Korea, the first patient was treated using Sumitomo Heavy Industries’ (SHI) proton line scanning technique at the Samsung Medical Center (SMC), and RaySearch Laboratories’ RayStation — an advanced treatment planning system — was used to generate the clinical treatment plans.

RaySearch, a company that provides advanced software for radiation therapy, offers proton treatment techniques and beam lines such as pencil beam scanning, uniform scanning, double scattering, and Sumitomo wobbling and Sumitomo line scanning. Line scanning and wobbling can be found in RayStation 5, which uses carbon ion treatment planning, the most advanced form of radiation therapy, and Plan explorer, a tool that helps clinicians with delivery efficiency and planning for patients.

Line scanning, a form of pencil beam scanning, allows for visualization of line segment and Bragg peak, a peak that shows energy loss of ionizing radiation during its travel through matter. The beam is delivered continuously, with a constant beam current in each energy layer so there is faster delivery of treatment plans. Wobbling, a broad beam technique, allows large tumors to be treated in a short period with a high degree of precision.

“We can conclude that the collaboration to achieve clinical implementation was extremely effective, and we have achieved a solution for treatment planning that matches our requirements and preferences,” said Youngyih Han, Ph.D., at Samsung Medical Center, in a statement.

The center is the first in Asia to deliver proton therapy treatments with RayStation and the first to use it in conjunction with Sumitomo delivery machines, according to the announcement. Additionally, the treatment is a result of a collaboration between RaySearch, SMC and SHI that enabled the treatment to be carried out on schedule.

“SMC was the first Asian center to order RayStation in 2012 and we are proud that we could contribute to its first treatment on schedule,” said Johan Löf, CEO and founder of RaySearch Laboratories, in a statement.

By the end of December 2015, Samsung Medical Center had already performed the first treatments with the Sumitomo wobbling proton technique.
