At RSNA, Intelerad Medical Systems announced its acquisition of Clario Medical, a Seattle-based zero footprint worklist provider.

With new worklist capabilities added to its portfolio, Intelerad hopes to augment its existing PACS products to better meet the needs of rapidly growing radiology practices and health systems.

"We are pushing more and more to get all of our solutions to leverage the cloud, the fact that their solution is already zero-footprint fits nicely with where we're heading," Paul Lepage, Intelerad's newly appointed president told HCB News, adding that Clario's volume of larger ambulatory customers creates a new growth opportunity for the company.

Under Intelerad, the existing Clario headquarters will become a center of excellence and technology hub in Seattle, tapping into the existing cloud technology expertise in the area for radiology applications.

"You think of Seattle in terms of IT and the talent that's there; we are moving more toward the cloud, and Seattle is one of the meccas when it comes to the cloud, so it makes a lot of sense for us to have a larger presence there," said Lepage.

In terms of actual worklist capabilities, Lepage points to voice recognition as a topic of particular emphasis, as well as artificial intelligence components.

"Clario's worklist is strong on assignment of studies and letting clients customize their assignments as they want it, so it's highly customizable for different workflows," said Helene Gey, Intelerad's vice president of marketing. "How they go about assigning workload to their radiologists requires flexibility."

One of the key features of the Clario worklist is that it is PACS-agnostic, which Intelerad hopes will make it a desirable tool for larger health systems that may be utilizing multiple PACS systems.

Existing Intelerad customers will be moved over to the Clarion worklist on a customer-by-customer basis. According to Lepage, having the acquisition announced at the beginning of RSNA is perfect timing because it gives the company an opportunity to hear directly from its customers about want they want in terms of new performance capabilities.

“The Intelerad and Clario businesses are a great natural fit and highly complementary in terms of vision, product, and people” said Chris Wood, Clario’s CEO, in a statement. “This is an exciting opportunity to advance our vision on a larger scale, and to deliver the benefits this combination offers to our clients”
