High drama in
the Senate Wednesday
The U.S. Senate erupted in a rousing ovation late Wednesday as Senator Edward M. Kennedy returned to the chamber for the first time since his brain tumor diagnosis and surgery. Perhaps equally boisterous were the cheers from the AMA and medical community when Senator Kennedy cast a decisive 60th vote to end the deadlock and restore doctors' fees for Medicare patients.
"I return to the Senate today to keep a promise to our senior citizens, and that's to protect Medicare," the senator said in a prepared statement.
The bill, HR 6331, eventually passed 69-30 in the Senate, a veto-proof majority. Read the details of the vote here:
